ANSWERING THE CALL!

A CENTURY OF CANADIAN NAVAL HEROES:
STORIES OF ORDINARY CANADIANS DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS

Lieutenant Rowland Bourke, VC

Rowland Bourke of Nelson, BC, did his utmost to "Answer the Call" during WWI. He commanded a small Motor Launch during a daring attack to block the harbour in Ostend, Belgium and thereby deny the enemy the use of this strategic port. He rescues survivors from another vessel under very heavy fire during the operation and is awarded the Victoria Cross - the highest award for military valour in face of the enemy.

WW1 ML (Motor Launch)
Listen to a short audio vignette by radio personality Nick Vandergragt on the exploits of Lieutenant Bourke

"Answering the Call" is the idea of CFRA Ottawa radio personality Nick Vandergragt. Nick believes that Canadians should hear the stories of the thousands of Canadian men and women who have served in our Navy, Army and Air Force as these are compelling parts of our national heritage.
